Governor Rell Asks State Residents to Observe Moment of Silence and Lower Flags on September 11
To mark the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America, Governor M. Jodi Rell has proclaimed September 11, 2007, a Day of Remembrance in Connecticut.
The Governor asked that state residents observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. on Tuesday, the time the first airliner crashed in New York City six years ago.
The Governor also directed that U.S. and State of Connecticut flags be flown at half-staff through sundown on September 11, as part of the remembrance of those who lost their lives and the loved ones who mourned.
"The most trying times in American history have allowed us to become a stronger, more united and cohesive nation," Governor Rell said in the proclamation. "In the six years since September 11, 2001, our Nation has grappled with the lessons of that day and conducted some important soul searching. We have withstood pain and loss, but have also grown and nurtured each other and our Nation as a whole.
"So let us use this anniversary as an opportunity to not only mourn and reflect, but to honor and grow. Although we all wish to avert tragedy, it may befall us just the same. When it does, let us be propelled to goodness in its wake. Let us never relinquish our basic commitment to one another in times of need, nor the ideals that our great Nation was built upon." Governor Rell led an official state service at the Living Memorial at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport on September 6. The memorial honors the 156 people with Connecticut ties who died on September 11, 2001.
